Is Being a Software Developer in Istanbul Really an Advantage?

Is the Istanbul Advantage Real?

The majority of software companies in Türkiye are in Istanbul. A significant share of venture-backed startups are Istanbul-based. Major tech companies, fintech players, gaming companies - this ecosystem is concentrated in Istanbul.

But in an industry where remote work rates have reached 83% (getSalary 2026), how much practical meaning does this geographic concentration still have? Let's flip the question: do you have to live in Istanbul?

Is There a Salary Gap?

Istanbul-based companies tend to offer slightly higher salaries on average. This gap is narrowing, though.

Five years ago, applying remotely to Istanbul companies from outside the city was unusual. Now most have moved to remote-first or hybrid setups. You can live in Ankara or Izmir and work for an Istanbul fintech at full Istanbul salary.

Where the difference still shows: office-based roles. An office job may pay more in Istanbul - but then you have to factor in the cost of living calculation too.

Cost of Living: Istanbul vs. Other Cities

Istanbul is Türkiye's highest cost-of-living city. Basic expenses including rent according to 2026 data:

Istanbul (middle neighborhoods, European/Anatolian side):

  • 1+1 rent: 25,000 – 45,000 TL/month
  • Transportation: 3,000 – 5,000 TL/month
  • Food + groceries: 8,000 – 14,000 TL/month
  • Total basic expenses: 36,000 – 64,000 TL/month

Ankara (central neighborhoods like Çankaya/Bahçelievler):

  • 1+1 rent: 14,000 – 26,000 TL/month
  • Transportation: 1,500 – 3,000 TL/month
  • Food + groceries: 7,000 – 12,000 TL/month
  • Total basic expenses: 22,500 – 41,000 TL/month

Izmir (central neighborhoods like Konak/Karşıyaka):

  • 1+1 rent: 16,000 – 28,000 TL/month
  • Transportation: 1,500 – 2,500 TL/month
  • Food + groceries: 7,000 – 12,000 TL/month
  • Total basic expenses: 24,500 – 42,500 TL/month

A developer living in Ankara or Izmir instead of Istanbul on the same salary can save 10,000-20,000 TL more per month - or experience a comparable quality of life with considerably less stress.

Is the "Escape from Istanbul" Trend Real?

A trend that began with the 2020 pandemic and has since become permanent: experienced developers leaving Istanbul. This manifests in a few different forms:

City change: Moving from Istanbul to Izmir, Ankara, Bursa, Antalya. Gaining from both quality of life and the rent/cost of living differential.

Moving to smaller towns or rural areas: For fully remote workers, locations like Alaçatı, Bodrum, Sapanca, Trabzon can become career bases. When internet connectivity and suitable working conditions are met, moving away from the city no longer requires career sacrifice.

Moving abroad: Portugal, Netherlands, Germany, Canada - the number of developers moving to these countries while earning in foreign currency is growing. This is a separate discussion but is part of the trend of leaving Istanbul.

Ankara's Overlooked Advantages

Ankara is Türkiye's capital and quite a strong alternative from a software industry perspective.

Public technology projects (TÜBİTAK, defense industry, BTK) are concentrated in Ankara. Positions requiring security clearance or wanting to work with specific profiles are irreplaceable in Ankara. Established technical universities like METU, Hacettepe, and Bilkent also strengthen Ankara's software ecosystem.

Cost of living is 30-40% below Istanbul, traffic stress is much lower, and the city has a settled order. For career purposes, when you consider that most work is done remotely anyway unless targeting the public sector or defense industry, the disadvantages diminish.

Izmir: Why Is It Attractive for Developers?

Izmir is one of Türkiye's fastest-growing cities. The tech ecosystem still lags behind Istanbul and Ankara, but there's momentum.

The number of startups and small-to-medium technology companies is growing especially fast. Ege University and IYTE (Izmir Institute of Technology) produce a deep technical talent pool. Sea and climate quality, escape from Istanbul traffic, lower rents than Istanbul - these are concrete draws.

For a developer working remote for a foreign company, Izmir is very attractive: one-third of Istanbul rents, similar cultural infrastructure, increasingly convenient flights, and proximity to the European market.

How Do You Decide Where to Live?

A simple framework: do you have an obligation to physically go to a company? If no - make your city choice entirely based on quality of life, social environment, and cost calculation.

If what Istanbul offers (major city infrastructure, cultural diversity, career network) is genuinely critical for you, stay. If it isn't, the Istanbul requirement to have the same salary and a different quality of life no longer exists.

On the other hand, if you're in the early stage of your career and want to go to the office and learn alongside a team, large companies in Istanbul or Ankara still offer an advantage. Remote learning is difficult and the value of an office environment in the first year is real.
